so 8,000 - 10,000 miles and they need cleaned. i decided i would do mine and try and make a helpful guide for people from the internetz incase they need to do similar.
first off you need to purchase some air filter cleaner and some air filter oil. now there are many different types available for a variety of different prices. i chose to purchase the green filters set to use on my green filter. this is mostly due to the oil being also like a colour stain. k plus n oil is red in colour. you dont want to put red oil on your green filter as it may end up brown.
next step is to locate the cone air filter in the engine bay.
then remove it. usually this requires a screwdriver. supervision may be required.
now it recommends that you can blow the filter out with an air line. if you do not have an air line, you can make use of a brush and run the brush over all of the filter to try and dis-lodge some of the dust and particles. a brush does work quite well.
next step is to apply the cleaner. it looks like washing up liquid. apply it all round the cotton element and even brush it in to areas that have more stubborn dust.
then leave the filter to soak all the cleaner in for between 10-15 minutes. or as described on the bottle.
i found this a useful period of time to make myself some cheese on toast, pepper is optional, and have a nice strong cup of norther tea and a hand made roll up.
then clean the cleaner from the air filter. starting from the inside of the filter then eventually going all aroud it. warm water is good, you dont need it at high pressure as the cleaner does dis-lodge the grime pretty well and it mostly just rinses off. areas of thicker dirt again you can use the brush.
then leave it to dry. if you have a radiator that is currently heating the house, or a hair dryer at hand these can speed the process up.
once dry, apply the oil. due to the oil in the green filters maintenance kit being stained, you can actually see the areas you have applied it. apply it nice and even and also not too thick. finally apply a light coat to the inside of the cotton element. that is your filter now cleaned and oiled.
replace filter and you are complete.

I see, as dirt particles could get in and give you premature internal wear.
