i've heard lots of people say they have problems getting their sky BB working initially. 2 guys i work with said they had to spend hours on the phone trying to sort it out. when i switched to Virgin it was all installed and working in less than 2 hours.
this is me got it all set up easily enough. wireless connection works fine on my PC and my girlfriends and girlfriend's sisters laptops (no pics).
but my laptop won't connect wirelessly so i need to connect it to the internet using the ethernet cable.
pain in the arse. had it a month or so now.
when we phoned them up last time we were on for an hour and a half which didn't sort anything. then rang back a few days later and was on waiting to get through for 30 mins before hanging up.
it's a right piss take. 57 quid a month for jack shit.
If everything else can connect ok it would suggest the problem is with your laptop.
it says it can't connect due to a timeout.
connected to my parents wireless internet ok.
these silly indian call centres are shite.

I like Virgin because of the internet and all the on demand features you don't get with sky. Pretty good money aswell imo. Yes sky has more channels but they are all shit!

Sky TV is better, Virgin broadband is arguably better depending what ADSL services are available.
Go with whoever has the best deal on if you don't have a preference.

Virgin and Sky are pretty much like for like in terms of TV, although Virgin is a little more if you're after the Sky Sports and Sky Movies. However you do get ESPN (inc classic and America) included in the XL package. HD wise, Virgin has a few channels less than Sky although they are catching up and there is a difference in Picture Quality between the two platforms - neither of them are bad though. Also the HD box has 3 tuners rather than 2.
Only major advantage Virgin has over Sky is their Video On Demand, which is pretty decent for catching up on BBC iPlayer etc.
Regarding broadband, if you're in a decent area then Virgin (it's ONLY fibre to the cabinet, FTTC, not fibre to the home, FTTH) beats ADSL by miles. But like ADSL where you can get oversubscribed exchanges, you can get oversubscribed UBRs so come peak times your net connect could suffer.
Phone wise, it's all about the same. If you're after cheap calls then look into VOIP, as mobile/international charges are usually cheaper.
*Worth mentioning that cable will be shifting to IPTV soon, which should free up a load of bandwidth allowing for more channels/VOD/interactive stuff/off-site PVR/etc
