Im planning on doing some hot works i.e. cutting, welding, grinding in my garage.

Trouble is theres an exposed gas pipe running at waist height through it, it runs from outside at the gas main up to the boiler, so, what can I do?

Would boxing it in be adequate??

I dont really want to blow up my new house!!

Can I not just box it in with timber batons & plaster board?? Or is it strictly not reccommended to do hot works in a timber frame construction house/garage??

garage should be fire proofed to meet standards so shouldnt really be a problem unless you are planning to cut and weld the pipe itself

id just get on with it tbh

You can only box in a gas pipe if you fit vents to the boxing. It has to be vented.

Are you meaning that the exposed gas pipe, just the copper pipe running through the garage and that there are no open ends.

If so you'll be fine.

You wont blow up your house unless you cut through the pipe.

If im say......welding a few foot from that & some red hot weld slag lands on top of it it will be goodnight Vienna wont it!!?

Yes it will.

Fit a half boxing; the top and front are coved but the bottom is open so its still vented. ie, fix some 2x1 to the wall and then a bit of 1/8 or 1/4 inch ply to the front just to protect it.
upsidedown 'L' shaped.

Yeah I see what you mean. Instead of totally enclosing it, just cover the exposed angles. Although if im welding at floor lever then theres still an element of risk

I'd box it in with fire resistant plasterboard, why does it need to be vented? Gas pipes arent vented when they are enclosed in walls, floors, ceilings etc...

If its copper it will be fine, its very hard to get natural gas to explode anyway, needs to be between a 5 - 15% mix of gas to air

if your that bothered, just turn the gas off
