Jenson Button was taken to Monte Carlo's Princess Grace Hospital for a precautionary check-up after suffering a 180mph crash at the start of the final practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix.
The 23-year-old Frome-born racer, who had been third fastest in qualifying on Thursday, could be ruled out of the race, despite not appearing to have suffered any serious injuries following the high speed crash.
Button's BAR car bounced off two guard-rails before smashing sideways into a third metal barrier on the fastest part of the tight and twisty Monte Carlo street circuit.
The Briton was stuck in the cockpit of his badly-damaged car for several minutes with Formula One's chief medic, Professor Sid Watkins, checking him over.
The former Williams and Renault driver was eventually put onto a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance to the nearby hospital while the team began an investigation into what had happened.
His team-mate Jacques Villeneuve also collided with a guard-rail when practice resumed, but he was able to bring his car to a stop and step from the cockpit.
Button's father, John, who watches his son at every race, said: "David Richards (BAR team principal) called to say Jenson is okay and is just having a check."
Button's accident came at the same spot where Austria's Karl Wendlinger was knocked unconscious after a heavy shunt in 1994.
The BAR driver had been hoping to finally score his maiden podium finish this weekend having continued his excellent start to the season by equalling his career-best finish of fourth in Austria two weeks ago.
