So as phones/technology is getting more advanced we are able to make free calls(skype/Vonage) and send free messages(BBM/Ping/Whats app) via Wifi, 3G etc.
Soon it would be good to have just a data only package(similar to iPad) and not need to be ripped a new arsehole for minutes and texts and be able to contact people for free. At the end of the day it can be done now. No doubt phone companys will cotton on though and start chargeing £30pm for a data only package.

I've never used Skype myself, could'nt you just call them and put the phone to your ear, ie. not look at them

there is a simple reason why it wont be done for YEARS.
resources and cost. to carry phone calls over a data connection, would take a massive infrastructure,it would cost waaaay too much. and until the uk economy is stable and people are willing to pay more so companyes can re-invest it wont happen.
look at the states, customers over there pay a fortune, the money goes back into r&d and now they have wimax/4g/lte.
we have only just started testing 4g/wima/lte here, and the cost is far too high for the end user, as people feel they are being ripped off already.
