always owned n/a cars but been looking at few turbo'd cars lately
whats the things to look out for on them and the do's and donts with them?

blue smoke on start up, make sure they're cold when you see them because if its been warmed up then he could be trying to hide various faults. let it warm up before you bring it on boost and let it cool down before you switch the engine off if youve been booting it

iv always been a bit unsure how much to believe the internet when it comes to turbo cars and people telling you you must let them cool own before switching off etc.
yes can understand on large turbo custom applications, but on factory turbo cars?
you dont get TDI's or other turbo cars sold from factory with instructions that you need to leave it running for x minutes before turning it off

if the oil is hot when you switch off the engine it can cook inside the turbo, its best to let the oil cool down and let it run through the turbo

I've owned so many turbos now and never sat there waiting for them to cool down If I'd been tracking it hard then maybe.

i agree but most tds run relatively safe boost, im only speaking from my experience with a modded mr2 turbo
edit: only when ive been caining it though, dont get me wrong i havent sat there on idle after a 5 minute drive

You don't really need to tbh, its exactly why they do cool down laps on track. That and no one drives flat out right up to there door step, the lil 30mph round town drive to get home normally does the job.

Amen. Oil is far better than it used to be though. I read somewhere, albeit a long time ago, that it's no longer valid and is just something people stick to as a general good rule of thumb rather than something that's actually a requirement.

Told you in the handbook for the calibra and cavalier turbo to leave it to cool for 1 minute

Cooling down - Its retarded to leave your cars sitting with a turbo timer on for 2mins or so after a drive. Such a waste of fuel (and engine life in the long run )
Yes - DON NOT just turn the car off if your just kicked the crap out of it, let it cool during driving.... worst case cool down for 10-20secs maybe before switching off. So you dont stop the oil flow basically when its roasting hot in the turbo.
Same with any car.... dont thrash when oil is cold.
Dont let oil get to hot....
To be honest its no different to a bloody NA.

Did not quote but blue smoke on start up can be valve stem seals. Blue smoke on overun is usually turbo seals.

MPS turbos are well known for going if they're not warmed up/cooled down properly. It's not hard to sit there for a minute or so or as mentioned just have a slow drive for the last couple of miles before you park up. If I have been for a proper ragging or just come off track it stays on for at least 5 minutes.

Had quite a few turbo cars over 10 if i include the diesels. Have always been abit anal with the warming up/cooling down, better to be safe than sorry imo. Never had a turbo fail apart from the octavia that let go at 120k and it was revod for abit.

I leave mine running for 20 - 30 secs while I shut the gates. Many cars that use the M20 Turbo have had faliures, mine is ok at 65k with a remap, never gets booted untill its roasing though, that could be it

On my TDi I always just let it idle for a mintue or so, usually while I grab my phone, wallet keys etc out the car. Cant do any harm can it and just lets the oil flow through the turbo. Turbo can still be spinning quite fast when you shut off the engine? Then when engines off, no oil is getting to it.
I do the same with engines at work, if theyve been run hard and under load just leave them a while to cool down after use
