Can you plug a dongle into your console and play online or do you have to have broadband?

You can't plug a dongle in directly. You could however plug the dongle into a computer, then the xbox to the computer and do internet connection sharing. From experience it'll be near unplayable, much better with broadband imo.

yup you need broadband for it to actually be playable, connection sharing with a dongle is attrocious lol

It will connect to xbox live doing the sharing, there's no doubt about that, but game play will lag to fuck. If you were playing something like castle crashers it probably wouldn't be too bad maybe, but MW2 etc. probs won't be up to much.
