I took a couple of drums from Silverstone a few weeks ago with the intention of making BBQ's out of them. Since then I haven't had a lot of time to make them but there is one thing that I need to sort before I start. They used to contain racing fuel in them and I need to get all the vapour out before I can cut them, has anyone done this before or can point me in the right direction for some info on safely cutting one in half. I've grown to be rather fond of my face see...
I was just thinking of filling it with water and then emptying it a few times but since the fuel is lighter than water and it will never mix I was worried that there might still be some in there after?

I've no definitive answer, but I would imagine a good lump of chalk dust or fine sand would soak up any major residues.

It's just got a tiny hole in it for a lid. Not really got anywhere outside to leave it either...

I could fill it up with water and freeze it, then stick it on the bandsaw and slice it. Then take out the ice and weld it all up. I probably wont do that though....

When I did mine which I think had had cooking oil in it I just left it outside for a while with the plugs off and let the rain fill it up a little. My plan was to fill it completely with water and then go for it. I don't have a hosepipe in my flat so had hardly any water in it in the end and couldn't be arsed making 100 trips down from kitchen with a jug so just washed it around a few times and then went for it.
Apart from full of water I'm not sure what the safest way of doing it is. Take it down the canal and flood it

I was going to suggest just fill it with water and cut it? will cut slower but better safe than sorry
but me being me would just go for it

Fill with couple of bottles of diet coke and drop some mentos in.
Resulting CO2 produced will over come the fuel vapor.
But you would need 14.7 parts air to vapour to get a really good flash.
Ian and Ste will 2nd that, a bottle of screen wash and a oil drump bbq = Flash and loud bang.

Filling with water should displace the vapour.
If you freeze it, you won't need a saw to split it.

Only if you fill it to the top and put a lid on it. Was more of a silly comment TBH
