My old Sony Ericcson K850i did it.
Actually they probably all did it, not just my one... just the way I typed it though.

used to be able to do it with my ancient nokia 5.1 you could pull the sim card cover off, click the battery back in and the sim card slot was exposed.

Only on the iPhone 4 ;-)
Phones that do this do not adhere to the GSM standards. OMGZ.

The iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS all take regular SIM's, I bet you could get an iPhone for next to nothing these days unless they've gathered some retro-coolness in their old age.
I remember there being an or Ericson which would take the whole credit card sized SIM in a slot in the top of it from back in the day

One of the first Three mobiles, the Motorola one. I had it and it was just a wee flap at the side that opened to expose the card. Click in - click out way of doing it.

Just remembered my 5800 you could remove/insert the sim without taking battery out, it's in a slot on the side

Where did you get that info?
My HTC Kaiser has a sim card flap on the back of the slideout screen.
As soon as the flap opens, it powers off the handset. Sim card in, close flap, power on, job done
