Right I'm wanting to get into Photography but don't know where to start, and I know a few of you are really into it. I'm wanting to get a cheap but decent digital camera, but not sure how much cheap is? Maybe you could point some out to me, then go from there? But any tips on anything would be a great help.
Thanks.

No such thing as a beginners camera. If you think you'll want to get into it properly get in bay and find a Canon 400D second-hand, will be fine and not too expensive. Including a standard lens obviously.
If you get into photography you can flog the body and upgrade to something better and the lens will still be useable.

I started with a 450D. Good camera for a semi-beginner, but should be easy enough to pick up with no experience.
Great quality pics.

I have a 450D also - it's excellent.
Can I also recommend the Collins Digital SLR Handbook written by John Freeman (ISBN:978-0-00-724210-8) which is an excellent read with plenty of pointers.

I have a Nikon D3000 and love it to bits. Best bet it to go to Jessops etc and see which you prefer as Canon/Nikon are both good but obviously different button layouts etc

Im not a canon fan boy but I do prefer them as they all autofocus even the cheapest models whereas the chepaer nikons only autofocus with certain lenses but thats the only reason I would pick one over the other.
I was going to buy a d40.

Is Canon the "best" make of DSLR cameras then?

I wouldn't say best, as theres very little to choose between Canon and Nikon. Both have excellent bodies and both have an excellent range of glass.
Both are as good as each other, and I think the pair are quite far ahead of every other manufacturer who hasn't got the same range of lenses available.

I have seen some great shots taken by both Nikon and Canon, but think of this - all Nikon do is cameras so they're completely focussed (no pun intended), whereas Canon do all sorts.
Numberwang!

Nikon also make binoculars, golf range finders, rifle scopes and a few other things.

Same ball park though isn't it.
They are both excellent at what they do.
Toss a coin and get either a Canon 50D or Nikon D90 both ace and will last you for years.
