Trying to weigh up the pros and cons of either for a track car. BMW is cheaper, and also I assume cheaper on parts. Although im lead tp believe the 944 is one of the best balanced chassis' and seem to be great value for money. What do people think of each?

I'd go with the 944, They are rock bottom price wise at the moment.

i prefer the porsche but only just.
if you're sticking with fwd, might as well keep the golf, 2 litre bottom end, headwork, cams, 4 branch, exhaust and have 190ish bhp on tap, strip some weight, would be rather quick

i hate the 994 but if its for track use then you cant go wrong as it doesnt matter how it looks, loads of parts available at reasonable prices

Why not get a e30 316i coupe and put a 325i engine in it from an e36, strip it to fuck and it will have 195bhp and weigh less than a ton.

...or e36 328i engine with 325i inlet manifold 215bhp+ and 30kgs lighter than a 325i cast iron block.

If they are going to be track cars, imagine you will need to chuck money at them too keep up with there age/milage issues, so i dont think it will matter which one you buy.
