is this legal aslong as the arches are modified so the wheels are not poking out of the arch?
here are the sizes I'm currently mulling over.
15" X 7j
16" X 7.5j
16" X 9j
would I be right in assuming this would be a straight fitment. aslong as the offset is correct?
figured downsize from the 17" to some 16" for better handling.
not sure about 15" as I have V6 brakes.

the wheels can stick out past the arches but the tread of the tyre must not. hence why people stretch tyres

hey man, well the 16 X 9 require some work on the arches, you would need a nice set of bigger arches for it too look right or modify existing. I've gone with the 16" 7.75 width instead offset is 38. it is the same for the 16 X 9 also offset that is if you chose that.

here is a handy link I found for offsets and different tyre options.
http://www.streetlegaltyres.co.uk/pcdchart.php/pages_id/12
will have some pics after wheels have been fitted, however I'm not a premium member so not sure how i'd do this...

you'll need a lower offset than ET38 to get 9's on
i.e. an ET49 9j would foul the suspension legs
you've got all sorts to think about, how low you want it, tyre fitment, what arches you'll be running, camber etc
the only good thing about buying a high offset (closer to ET49) is that if you need to, you can space them (although proper spacers aren't cheap)

right so to get 9s on i'd need lower than et38 whats the lowest you think would get away with? Plus i'd have to have abit of extra room inside to then add camber yes? Also would 16x6.5 (or 6j not sure whats best to start with) vw steelies at around et 50/52 be a good start before banding to 9 or 9.5j plus the width of some adapters as they were 5x120 i think or 112 ?

adapters for 5x120 or 5x112 will be at least 20mm thick so you'd be at ET30 straight away
personally i'd start with 15" g60 steels but they are ET38ish, so by the time you've added another inch or so to the fronts the offset would already be quite low
i ran et13 15x8 and that was fucking ballache to get right (camber, stretch, custom arches etc)
your best bet is to buy 4x100 steels (meriva ones come 16" i think) or go with g60 15" ones, set up the suspension and camber how you think you'll want it, offer up the unbanded steel and see what room you have to play with
corsa rear arches (b or c) aren't great for wide wheels tbh
