exactly. The RAF regularly deploy aircraft to the UK's Eastern air zones to tell the pesky russians to fuck off. They come here about once a week, fly just outside our air zone, we send up RAF planes to make them fuck off, they go home, we go home, cups of tea all round. Pointless exercise and it's been going on for years

I've not read up on the Fawklands war, all I know is it's a British isle near south America/Argentina..

If they were to try take it again (let's face it, it's very close to them and far from us so they might one day), they'd be able to send reinforcements quicker than us, they're also much bigger than us, quite intimidating.

Sucks how Britain used to own 1/4 of the world and now...we have like not much

Yes because the Taliban are equipped with ships and fast jets.

The bottom line is there was fuck all strategic about the strategic defence review.

- we have no seaborne projected air defence
- we have no submarine hunting capability

They saved QEC/CVF to save jobs and because of the cost issue of cancelling. Those saved jobs, might want to ask the 500 people who are getting laid off at the Scotstoun yard in the new year about that.

Within one week of the SDSR we lost track of a Russian nuclear sub and had to deploy borrowed Orion#s from the USA to go hunt it down, whilst Nimrod was cancelled, 1 of them in handover to the RAF the other ready for test flying before handover. In capability terms, the Orion might as well actually be the clapped out Ford 4dr saloon as an aircraft compared to the Nimrod. Its hasnt got a patch on it. Thats before we consider how bloody useful it would have been dealing with those Somali pirates.

We have the Typhoon flight based in the Falklands now, also we have improved SAM sites, on top of that we have the Daring class destroyers that would be able to cover the fast jet threat.

we have new hunter subs, Astute and her sisters soon. HMS Conqueror turned the Falkland conflict by sinking the Belgrano.

In fact, we are better prepared now than when we were in the 80's, from a naval and defense point of view.

and our new carriers will hopefully be converted to cats, and we can have proper jets. im hoping someone has the sense to just go buy the FA18 from the yanks. awesome aircraft, and proven.

True story this: few years ago the RAF QRa (quick reaction alert) were scrambled to intercept a Russian a/c over the North Sea. One of the Tornados navs was ill, so another called dave stepped in for that day, he wasn't too happy as it was his birthday. Anyway, over the North sea, they met up with the Russians and they were holding up a sign saying 'happy birthday Dave'. how freaking scary is it that they know this shit!

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Sneaky Russians:

Love this shot. It may be old tech, but it works.
