Actually, I believe you are wrong. On the original NFS games, you couldn't modify the cars iirc, only after Underground came out could you.

So no, modifying cars is not what NFS is known for.

Only thing lacking for me is a sort of free play where missions pop up as you cruise round kinda like GTA.

NFS Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon did among others.

Fair enuff. In Underground and every game since bar Hot Pursuit you have been able to mod cars. Thats roughly the last 5 or 6 games.
