I drive a 328i Sport and had an M3. Fantastic cars and probably the most rewarding car for the money! Awesome Value!
I have a 1999 which was built with the alusil block, so no worries there. bought it for £1,800 with 125k on the clock, leather, climate control, full electrics, full tax and test.
All i have done to it is changed the plugs, oil, air filer, oil filter, front bushes (didnt NEED them) and a front wheel bearing.
Id much rather have my car over any other car for the same money.

Since 103k-114k miles I have changed in order if I can....
front disks pads
4 corners brake pipes
Rear springs (snapped, eibach ones fitted all round)
viscous fan
water pump
drivers door switch
starter motor
exhaust cats fucked, so 328i system was fitted.
rear exhaust hangers
drivers door switch AGAIN
rear springs snapped AGAIN (fitted another pair of eibachs)
front drop links
rear shocks
rear top mounts
rear drop links
rear drop link brackets
1 front top mount
1 front shock (another one is fine anyway)
rear trailing arm bushes
rear vent window seals
another rear brake pipe
rear disks/pads
rear shoes
2 handbrake cables
Probably more I've forgotten

Looks like you have got an abused one sand-eel.
I had mine since 117.5k and the guy before me had it since 90k-ish.
he had new front arm bushes, rear springs, diff (his own fault though) and thats it i think. I just changed pads and discs, lambda and that was enough for MOT.

It wasn't abused, as there are tons of reciepts nearly all from bmw, its just that age/mileage where things wear out, I should have bought a higher mileage one.

I've got a 328, when i searched there weren't many underlying mechanical issues other than the engine blocks.
There are two types being ausil and something else, you want to check just below the starter motor and there should be a brown tab if it has the revised liners. If it doesn't there could be problems soon.

i have a 323i and it is great! Passed MOT yesterday with just a new lambda sensor.
it's on 120k miles now.
When i got mine it was on 140k, owned by my dad most of its life.
He's a tight arse and replaces nothing so it was a bit of a heap!
It was a nikasil block so barely idled even after a new idle control valve, regulary overheated so replaced the radiator. DO NOT even get me started on bleeding it.
Handled like a barge boat due to the trailing arm bushes, replaced many many other parts, lost track of it all.
Got it to 180k, it is still going though.
The 318is was a dream to drive and ran perfect.
So in short, get one that has been maintained.

Don't see why people have issues with bleeding the rad, turn the heater to hot, open the cap, undo THE BLEED SCREW and fill it up with the engine running.
