Deal with the d40 fell through, so looking at getting one at the end of the month now, my price range is up to £250 so looking at the nikon d40, canon 350d and canon 400d..
which would be the best to go for? (up to around £250 2nd hand)
thanks

They are all as good as each other pretty much so get whichever you like best, Ive said it before but d40s dont autofocus with all lenses which would annoy me a bit but not the end of the world.

400d then you won't be stuck with Nikon kit when it comes time to upgrade.

Go Canon out of those choices, on later cameras its more about personal preference but the lack of autofocus on the D40 makes it a no for me.

I bought a D40X, it's a great little camera but as mentioned, no auto focus on the body means that now I want to buy lenses for it I have to spend lots more money!

The kit lens is a bit rubbish. Not the sharpest in my experience.
Fine as you are learning how to use it, but you'll want to change it eventually.
