On my iPhone so will keep this brief.

Was using the laptop as normal, using the Internet and had iTunes on listening to music. First thing I notice wrong is when my music stops, iTunes had frozen. Into task manager to end it, explored freezes too. Ctrl alt del again, tried to restart, froze completely. Turned it off using the power button.

Boots up onto the safe mode selection screen, picked start normally, which fails, bugger. Restarts itself, comes up with windows repair, tells me theres a disk error which it will repair, takes ages. Does that, then Restarts. Now it says cannot find hard drive, the fuck?

Going to try my windows 7 upgrade cd, see if there's anything I can do with it. I think my data is on a different partition on the OS.

Any ideas?

Tried windows cd, can't find any drives to install to. Now noticing the hdd making a funny noise . Any way to get my data off it? Nothing major on there, fortunately just put all my music on my iPhone so that's safe.

Hard drive must be gone, can't find it in the boot options either. Took it out and put it back in again, no difference. Fuck sake.

Try the HDD in another computer as a removeable drive caddy if you have one. Might be able to get data off if it lives.

Fired in an old hdd, found it no problem. It's only 40gb though so it will do until a new 500gb turns up. Installing windows 7 now, think I'll invest in an external hdd for backups after this!

Alive now, not a bad turnaround! Still cost me £45 for a new fucking hard drive though, plus my porn collection is gone
