They all have an electronically adjusted cam chain tensioner at the rear of the engine.. I cant think of one single 1.8 20v turbo engine that doesnt have this..

AGU doesn't, loads of the MK2's run AGU's.

After some more research, it seems most engines built after 2000/2001 period will have VVT, early ones don't

MK4 1.8t

1.8 20VT K03 Turbo 150bhp. Maps to about 180ish bhp.

Later MK4 1.8t

1.8 20VT K03s Turbo 150bhp or 180bhp. Maps to 210+ bhp.

Audi TT Quattro

1.8 20VT K04 Turbo 225bhp.

Audi TT FWD

1.8 20VT K03s Turbo 180bhp.

But all the same engine pretty much, As said above, Bigger Turbo, MAF, Injectors, Diff downpipe & oil lines. A MK4 GTi with K04 fitted will do 270+ bhp with a custom map, Stainless, Bigger intercooler etc

Personal opinion

To be honest most of the VW people ive met are a right laugh and talk to every one.
Suppose it depends on how sCeNe they really are.

Unfortunately my experience is the opposite. The majority of them are crashing bores who can't see beyond the VW badge and think anything else is crap. Rather laughably they all seem to think that VAG stuff is the greatest quality of ever and nothing comes close.

That being the case they need to try owning some of the rusty, unreliable fucking VAG shit I've had the misfortune to own.
Take my current daily, a Passat TDi. I've owned some crap in my time but honestly nothing's been as unreliable as this heap of shit. I've also got the added 'bonus' of having nerdy, scene taxing, boring bastards twatting on about how great VWs are when I park it up.

Mind you telling them it's a heap of fucking shit and I'd rather have my Astra back usually shuts them up.
