Friend looking at buying a car to get from A to B

Has £2-3k as a lump sum- lives at home, no debt - can afford to pay up to £400 per month on finance also. Hes mid twenties, but has been on parents insurance so it cant be too high a group for insurance.

Hes looking at buying an 09 plate astra, 39,000 miles, 1.4 petrol from a local dealership.....around £7000 with a three year warranty, mot service package.....opinions?

He would be putting 2.5k down as deposit and clearing the rest over a one year finance deal 0%.

My initial thoughts were you could buy the same thing private for much less? But if he needs finance then it doesnt seem too bad a deal. I was thinking he would maybe better off just spending £3k on a private sale and not bothering with finance.

Would like some ideas on reliable daily drives for about the £3k mark as well please.

buy privately, cash is king.

why doesnt he look at 1.9 diesels or has he? insurance might be an issue, but I wouldnt bother getting finance on a 1.4 astra, buy it outright and tell him to move out!

although the warranty & MOT & Service pack sounds pretty good if he doesnt want to worry about that.

Wouldnt be my choice... but this is a pure financial decision he is making - quality of the drive isnt really an issue here.

Whats the question? Is £7000 for an 2 year old Astra expensive?

Have you driven one? I had one as a hire car for 3 days and 1.2 8v corsa made it look slow! I mean 'dangerous' as in there's no poke to get out of sticky situations, junctions etc.
:O c'mon guys . . .

Yeah driven loads, more than adequate as a daily driver. Not gona beat any speed records but far from dangerous.
