i dont have fancy dvd players 3d tvs etc

but

will a hd dvd work in a normal dvd player?

A DVD will work in any DVD player.

A Bluray will not work in a DVD player

No, A HD DVD will not play in a DVD player. As different as a cassette and a CD

You need a seperate player for HD-DVD's hence the reason the X-Box 360's came with a seperate device.
