Notice I didn't ask for alternatives or C&C about the car, I want advise for buying a Mini ONE around 2004 for a friend who has just moved over from France.
Anything to look out for?

Steering column,
Bushes
E/W's working (motors prone to packing up)
Boot leaking around high level brake light and or boot handle
I think they're the main ones for a non supercharged Mini off the top of my head.

Only thing worth remembering is that parts are fairly expensive purely because of the BMW connection!
A One can be mapped to Cooper spec easy peasy btw

1st generation minis suffer from
power steering pumps
bearing in steering coloms
occasionally headgasket
air bag lights on usually after hoovering them out can damage the wires under the seat causing this
gearbox whines crunches was a recall for them
there the main ones i can think of and what others have said

Not always true mate
With the rack check there is no play in it, can get it with the E46 ones so probably the problem with those.

When I was looking for my R53 I used this to weed out common problems, the list is a little repetitive as you go through the various years but it is the most comprehensive list I could find.
http://www.motoringfile.com/mini-r50r53-buyers-guide/
Otherwise www.totalmini.com has a common promlems thread, as do www.mini2.com and www.minitorque.com I suspect. The last one is the more technically minded of the three if you need tech advice.
Door sill rust and front strut top mushrooming can be a problem as well but i think the latter is more relevant to R53's. Still worth checking though.
