My mate with the XE mini clubman on carbs has ordered a shift light for it. The bloke selling it has asked whether it is single coil or wasted spark. Im baffled, any ideas?

I thought that as it uses a single coil, but i don't want to rule out wasted spark until im clear what it is.

wasted spark is when 2 plugs fire but only 1 is on the compression stroke, so one sparks when exhaust gas is expelled, harmless but keeps electrical shit more simple.

Suppose the only way of really knowing is taking the plugs out and see if 2 spark at the same time.

does the xe have a cam and crank sensor? if its got both it'll be single coil. wasted spark eliminates the need for a cam sensor

exhaust gas will have been mostly expelled and the valve be nearly closed by the time you get the spark on that cylinder, so unless is running super rich i doubt it, although i suppose theres the chance

Seriously some of the replies are rediculous....

Wasted Spark = Normally a single coilpack which is internally split in two firing cyls 1+4 then 2+3 at the same time - This is what is fitted to Dizzyless C20XE's

Single coil - One coilpack per cylinder - as fitted with most modern engines these days. They fire independantly of each other..

As regards the original post - let the guy know its running a dizzy

Single coil doesn't have to be a coilpack per cylinder, ie my old nova had a single coil with dizzy but isn't wasted spark as the dizzy arm only hits 1 "electode" at a time.

Yes distributer ignition system does use a single large ignition coil, however i have never ever heard it refered to as single coil ignition

its like refering to a Single carb set up as single point injection...
