Didn't really surprise me that it was top of the most read list on BBC.
Can't think of one person (apart from my brother as he is a prick ) that in e-mails, messages etc... wouldn't use this as a means of conveying there acknowledgement of something funny.

I will say that i don't agree to it being added to 'OED'
Wags point out that "LOL" is almost always disingenuous. "How many people are actually laughing out loud when they say LOL?" asks David Crystal, author of Language and the Internet.
Best thing written in argument of that.
Would say that 90% of the time i use it is purely due to habit.

I was literally saying the word "lol" out loud, like..3 years ago, yes in front of others, mostly at college tbh
