The Government is considering changing MOT law, so that a car will only require the test once every two years

As much as I hate MOT time, it does at least half guarantee certain things are working which are fairly important, like seatbelts, air bags etc and that cars arent rolling about like they do on Pimp My Ride

thing is i ve seen 2yr old cars with bald tyres and no brake pads left, lights not working , so this would make things worse

Problem is the cost would be at least double... and you would go longer with more parts breaking.
i see this as a way of the government getting older cars off the road.

2 years can be along time i car years, id hate to see the state of some of the crap ive owrked on over the years if there left to be moted every 2 years

am changing my mot tester this year as i've never had a car fail and don't think they are checking everything properly

I personally think it should be done on mileage. If the mileage is not reached in a couple of years then it gets MOT'd

Terrible idea.
There are people who don't check bulbs, brake pads etc. themselves who need someone to tell them to do stuff like that.
They could get an advisory on one test and leave it 30k before it's actioned?
Silly suggestion.

£45 a year really doesn't bother me tbh. Probably keeps a few shit heaps off the road as well.

Then there are people like me who buy or get given new motors and pile 40k on them within a year. So after 3 years it will have done 120k... I might not bother with regular servicing... And yes it's killing me doing these kinds of miles and doing a 7.5 hour day on top - something i can't do forever!
I have noticed a worn tyre, brake light and a wiper has split all this week, both will be sorted in the next few days. Can happen at any point!

Which means if you have an MOT it'll pass, which is a fairly necessary evil.
Same with my cars, I would notice and fix things.
My concern is people who don't notice and drive around for nearly two years like that.

The not having an MOT for 3 years for me is a worry is what i'm more putting across. Maybe that should be changed.
Agree people driving around for years with no brakes lights etc is a concern.

some of the cars we get in and mot that are just having there first mot is scary how people even drive them.
Had a volvo in the other week, 3 years old with abouty 80k on it and all 4 tyres were very illegal, loades of bulbs out. no pads on front left at all.
Worst thing was that a bottom arm was bent beyond belief, had a massive smack under there. Must of driven like shit.
People just dont check there cars so 2 years is stupid, wont ever come in anyway.
