won't pick up his hard drive basically, says unformatted when you go to memory under the setting menu.
This is his 4th xbox 360 to break i've only ever bought one of each era of xbox and never had any of them break
is there a way to recover his saved games etc?

might be. When I went from 20gb to 120gb I used a cable off ebay to transfer the data on my PC and then onto the new drive.

if he got the cable from ebay then it should have come with a DVD full of dodgy software. I'm pretty sure one of the programs backs it up

Doesn't sound like the xbox itself is broken. If he's been dicking around with it anyway then it's likely his fault.
With regards to trying to save the data, probably best to try the cable along with xplorer360 or xport360 and see if they can read it. Otherwise just bite the bullet, format it and don't dick around in future
EDIT: Depending how desperate he is to save the data, there is another way too, which would involve opening the HDD case and removing the SATA HDD inside and sticking it into a PC/laptop.

I prefered it to xplorer360 myself, seemed to crash less. Both are a bit unstable tho.

i download xplorer360 yesterday, plugged his harddrive in, but didn't know what i was looking for.
wasn't very much there, something about partition 1 & 2, and a couple of folders with nothing in them

So you can view the drive contents then? Likelyhood is it's salvagable then. I'm not holding your hand through the process tho, so you can google about the xbox file system layout.

hi
when we try to format the harddrive on the xbox menu it doesn't do anything.
do we have to format it with a computer or perform any with a paperclip?
