My mate gave me a Buffalo HD today but he doesn't have the installation disc. Can I install it on my computer without the disc?
I've tried doing it through the windows installer but it isn't working that way, I've also looked on google but can't find any info.
Model: Buffalo HD-PET500U2/W-EU and my O/S is windows XP.

Try another PC first, could just be good old Windows being a little silly.

See if it appears in disk management (start>type disk management and press enter), if it does, just format it

External drives are normally just plug and play, you won't need to install any drivers unless you are using Windows 95 or something equally ancient.
If it's a normal 3.5" drive inside the case you will need to power it via an external power supply BTW.

Just tried it again through the windows installer and it said your device is installed and ready to use.
How do I get to the hard drive on my computer though? Its not showing up in 'My Computer'?

A friend was given a Buffalo HD that wasn't apparently working. Same as you, it said it was installed but not showing.
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
and add it from there.

Probably a long shot but have you tried rebooting (with the drive still connected)?

The mainboard on the enclosure may be damaged. The drive itself may be ok. I'd open it up and remove the drive and install it as a secondary drive in your PC. See if it's found that way using all of the methods above.

Just unplugged it then plugged it back in and it appeared, then disappeared again

Hmm... I may try this if I can't get it to work through the USB

Could be the eSata/usb connector on the enclosure that's dodgy. I had a caddy that would do this on the esata side but was fine via usb. As said open it up and check the drive. A new external caddy can be bought for about £12.
