Go for at least a 2.2 or Turbo.

2.2s are probably the cheapest to buy.Tax will be about the same surely. My mates 1.8 vectra is the same price to tax as my 2.2 Astra.
Fuel economy will probably be better in the 2.2 aswell.

Sorry,the 1.8 is 134 compared to the 2.2 at 143.For 6mths.
My 2.2 is more economical than his 1.8.

We used a 2002 1.8 coupe to go to pvs this year, was a great wee car, £60 to fill it in glasgow and 400 miles later still had plenty to go, liked it so much I plan to get one

Anything pre-2001 will be the same to tax.
After that, currently.
1.8 190g/Km £245
2.2 206g/Km £260
Turbo 214k/Km £260
Not much in it.
If in doubt, bang the reg in here -

my bro has had the 1.8 16v for years now, bought it 6months old and still has it now, 80k miles on it.
i think the only problem its had is the exhaust needing replacing
goes pretty well to, not mind blowing but plenty to get around without feeling frustrated
