Right...My girlfriend is just finishing a course is beauty sciences or something similar, she's been on a look out for a masseuse(sp) and general spa work job. She got an interview for one in Manchester but was unsuccessful, the guy was taking another person on so rang her etc and she said she would come in for a few days unpaid training.

Now due to the commute and similar jobs being available closer to home she wants to quit. Now she hasn't signed any letter of acceptance nor has she signed a contract or been paid for the training she's done (5x 10 hour days). She's also covered her own transport costs too. Hes only just got back to her with a start date which would be the 7th of July, this is when she said that she no longer wants the job position.

The guy is a bit of a dick that she works for and he owns his own spa. He just sent her a really catty email saying we need to discuss this further and about all the money he's spent training etc, so just want some advice as to what she is obliged to do, nothing in my eyes as she hasn't formally signed anything due to him being lazy she can just quit on the spot?

Can't do anything... And if he could, I doubt very much that he would. Apart from call her a badger

Exactly so there is no contract so she can do what she likes. And if she hasnt been paid then it wont be through the tax books either so what can he do? Apart from send her a shitty email saying he trained her for nothing.

No spence. No contract has been placed infront of her what so ever, she's only been told the pay and hours in person. Doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing too much, he only has one other employee so might be new to it all...I understand him being unhappy due to training her and then her rejecting the job offer, but what can you doo!

By continuing to work tough you are as such agreeing to terms. Would be dodgey though as she has not even seen a contract

But no start date was agreed by this date and the start date is about two weeks away, most contracts require a weeks notice, but he did originally want her to come in for the next two weeks for unpaid training which obviously isn't going to happen as its up to her, so she wouldn't even be able to serve the notice. Sounds like he's been a bit shit about it all but I don't want him trying to make her think that shes obliged to do more when she isn't.

The time that she went in was strictly training, she didn't do any treatments in clients etc

Tell her to man up and tell him verbally or by writting that she is leaving and not wont be coming back, and that will be the end of it all.

At least she got the training she needed to do the job she wants though. Most people would be put off because theyre not being paid but after all the recession it just goes to show there are people who go that step further to get a job.

Agree with sc0ott, I would go the step further and do training unpaid or a few days trial etc to prove myself then get a job.

Im convinved over 50% of the people unemployed dont try that hard to find work. I was unemployed for 2 weeks recently and got back into work within that period doing a job i want to do. Not easy in everyones case but im sure theres work out there to pay the bills etc, perhaps not a career etc though

ahh it was the job she wanted but the travel was to much...

Yeah the training was unpaid, i think this is normal in the beauty industry. he did pay for a trainer to come in and teach specialist stuff such as ipl (hair removal with electric shocks i think :/)

Anyway she spoke to him today and he teared into her saying she was ungrateful and would never go far in life with an attitude like this
