Bit bored tonight so having a browse of Auto Trader, budget of £3k and diesels (I prefer the drive of a diesel over a petrol).
There are some proper bargains (well in my eyes anyway) of what I call premium brands about?
Volvo
Mazda
Really like the look of this Jaguar
How long has this been the case or am I blinkered and this is just the going rate at the moment??

My car is 6 years older than the Mazda and has less mileage, so that explains it.

Second hand cars like those can be cheap because due to higher tax and insurance prices there isn't as much demand. Some great cars for the money, that Jag is well cheap.

Not the cheapest or the lowest miles but a nice car.

I'm not too fussed on mileage tbh, the sorts of cars I've linked above are the type that are serviced and fixed properly as they cost so much to buy in the first place, so if it had an extra 30k on it but was £1500 less I wouldnt even think about it...
edit - and yes, it must be the insurance that put's people off because the Jag above for me (although I am only 23 but have 6NCB) is £200 a year more to insure than my 2.0DTi Astra, but less to tax, even though it weighs more, has more power and torque
In fact, doing quotes on the cars people have linked here so far:
My current Astra 2.0DTi £420
Jag 2.0d £652
Paul's Vectra 3.2 V6 £620
Colin's XK8 £680
This thread has certainly made me feel a bit twitchy with the old purse strings

Probably would be, but even if you had it for a little while for some V12 motoring fun then get rid it has to be worth it
Also found this ghetto mobile
Anyway, I fear I'm getting off-topic

That one's probably cheap because of it needing the roof to be repaired, but one that's all working can't be a lot more.

It shocked me a bit to be honest, I thought it would be nearer £2k, especially that 4.2l V8 Jag Colin posted, couldn't believe it, buying and insuring it is one thing, but running it is something else

What was the Merc Clarkson bought for just under 7k on a Top Gear episode? Was the one they found white powder and vaginal juices on the passenger seat. Some car for the money that.

Completely different car, but I'm debating a C class C220 CDI. You can get a decent one for about £3.5k and i've heard of people getting 35+MPG in mixed driving conditions. The only thing that's putting me off is fixing it if it breaks. Something like this:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201113383472610/sort/priceasc/usedcars/transmission/manual/price-from/2000/price-to/4000/fuel-type/diesel/model/c_class/make/mercedes-benz/page/1/postcode/ch459lb/radius/60?logcode=p

Godmother has a C200 CDI - it's a lovely car with everything you need, all the toys etc. etc.
The C220CDI auto drops into the top £250-odd tax band though...
