Are there any formalites to it?
Ive got a place on the uni course I applied for and I start in September.
Can't make sense of how long I need to work after handing in my notice.
Some people have said a month, others 2 weeks. Not sure if it makes a difference that I'm still employed as an apprentice

It will be in your contract. I worked for a company who didn't give me a contract despite asking and asking, they pissed me off so I handed in my notice and stopped working there immediately.

Handed mine in last week. Contract said I was required to work 12 weeks notice, but they've let me have 8. Still a long time but not a lot I can do really!

Just wrote them a letter stating which date I wanted to leave and why I was leaving. As said, just use a template online.

No, Knew they where going to do it a few days before, then when they come in to actuall hand in their notice they just say to them, "You may as well go now, You're no use to me now" sort of thing!

Depends on your contract, I *THINK* that if it isn't specified in your contract then you can give them a minimum of 7 days.

If you are ok with your employer it might be worth talking to him about it, a friend of mine did exactly that today and they agreed for him to work a 2 week notice to take him to the end of the month.

Some companies seem to think that once you have resigned then you are going to start a manic mission of ripping their data and telling their clients to eat dicks. Truth is if you have have planned to resigned you normally think of doing these things first before you hand it in.

Fill your pockets up with staples and pens.
