I've been trying to bid on damaged iPhones all night yet every time I get outbid by a couple of quid, even though I'm leaving it to the last 5-10 seconds.
It says I'm the high bidder then immediately I'm outbid.
Is this was 'sniper' software does? Can anyone recommend a program?

Sniping will only work if there are no other proxy bids, which on popular items like that is likely.
All a snipe does is leave the expectation of price low. If other people have bid higher than your snipe amount then you will still lose to them. Even if they only matched your bid, they will win because they placed it earlier.
I use justsnipe.com

So I just enter my maximum bid as I would normally and the program places it on ebay at the last minute, if someone had already bid higher I still lose. Thats fine by me, i'll give it a go.

I don't agree it makes the place shit, you can still win things by bidding enough to do that, if it goes for more then someone else wanted it more.
If anything it makes selling a bit better because you need to go high to make sure you don't lose to a proxy. I think Ebay end prices are on the whole higher than elsewhere.

All well and good just saying bid the most your willing to pay but sometimes you force peoples hands who then end up paying more than even they wanted to as a result of bidding slightly early.

Not just that no, but on a whole these thorps things, along with it's popularity have made it worse. Sniping just ads to it all.
If I was to bid £100 for something at the last second it's impossible for me to beat a computer. However I may be able to beat you personally and grab a bargain for myself.
Just my opinion.

ebay went down the pan a while ago! waste of time and money on fee's imo
its more legit selling knock off plasma's from the back of a wagon.
theres too many people with more than one account bumping bids up too
and dont get me started on "i have not yet received my item" YES YOU HAVE!!
sorry for the rant

TBH i've never seen so many 'NO SERVICE' iPhones on there.
'I'm not sure what happened, just lost signal, no box, charger, etc.'
In other words you found/nicked it and are after a quick profit.

But its like £2 every time. I'll bid £2 more than I would normally be willing to pay and see how it goes.
No more worth buying tonight though.
