im thinking of mounting a front mount rad on the imp, how exactly do header tanks work? is it just a tank of coolant mounted higher than the radiator? where in the grand scheme of piping would it go?

You could always get a top fill radiator. Should be much easier and tidier.

so a bit of a search says they are used so when the water gets hot and expands it has somewhere to go.... so yes they are needed so as not to damage the engine and needs mounting above the cylinder head

Cars with top fill rads normally run an over-flow bottle at the side of the rad.

I would hazzard a guess and say most Jap cars run a top fill rad.

I'd run a header thank.. They are idiot proof as you can see at a glance how much coolant you've got.. Problem with the jap stuff is even if you can see coolant in the over-flow/expansion tank it doesnt mean your cooling system is full, plus they are a pain to bleed.
