Been looking at one of these as the 207 i bought doesnt have a big enough boot for a pushchair and dog!!
Have found a nice SRI 150 Diesel with full XP pack; it has 60K on and about 4 years old. I know the gearboxes are known for being weak on these but is there anything else to look out for?
Also what is the tuning box which increase BHP and MPG for these?

Unsure on what to look for, but i think a remap from Warren takes it to about 210bhp iirc? May be wrong there!

Those Mk5 SRi estates look the fukin business with the XP kit and Penta's.
Tuning boxes will see it around 190-195bhp.

They are great. I had one to drive at work when they were new out.
I'd probably get one when I need to buy a car.

only problem ive had with mine was egr valve
took it back to vaux and they cleaned it under warranty along with another 2 others that day!!
They said it was pretty common
Other than that its been a great economical family car

Swirlflaps, mega expensive to fix as its a new inlet manifold, but thats easy to spot if they have gone. Pull the engine cover off, look down the engine in the hole for a long rod with for connections on it, every one should be connected, if not walk away.
Egrs are prone to clogging but can be cleaned out easily in 10 mins.
Boxes are fine. I think its high torque that kills them. Mine is fine on 60k.
Otherwise they look great with the xp kit on, esp if its the full kit as thats quite rare. Economy is good, I regularly get over 50mpg in mine.

people should buy faster cars, rather than buy something 150bhp with the sole intention of making it 200bhp as cheap as possible

Agreed, Increasing the power by 25% on a 5 year + car is just asking for trouble. If the clutch, box, turbo, inlet etc are not at 100% the tuning just intensifies any of the problems and speeds up the rate as which stuff breaks.

Why?
You'd have to buy one of the petrol turbo's to get any faster and get worse mpg?

Just like most aspects of modifiying a 2nd hand car then.

Its not asking for trouble though like you have said. Not on such a short term basis anyway.
You could go as far as saying that just driving it will speed up the chances of things breaking.

Might as well just go and buy a brand new Ferrari instead of a 4 year old Astra.

My tuning box was only on my Astra for 3000 miles before the gearbox went.
Granted the gearbox may have already been tired but I have no doubt it would have lasted a good 20-30k miles more had it not been for the extra torque.
If you want a car thats 200bhp+ buy a VXR and leave it standard.

Shouldn't make a difference on how old it is? My Ibiza was already remapped when i got it at 19k and it is still running fine with 65k on it. And the car got regular doses of heavy right foot too
