I worked as a mechanic in a garage for 7 years and left a month ago to work in another garage, due to a big row with the manager I walked out after a week and havent worked since.

Ive been looking every day for other jobs but there isnt much coming up. To be honest for the last few years I havent enjoyed working on cars at all but due to being stuck to the same old routine I kept at it.

Now im thinking a career change is probably the right thing for me, however since I left school I dont know anything different apart from mechanics so unsure what path to go down.

The majority of jobs coming up seem to be sales oriented and i dont think thats for me. To be honest Ive not got a clue what to do but need to get back working asap.

I'l be 23 next month so not a silly wee boy anymore and probably at a good age to try something different before I regret it several years down the line.

Has anyone else changed careers and what did you do? Any suggestions on what I should do as well? As im totally stuck

Something like working for british gas would be good, servicing boilers and fires and stuff like that, they are on around £28000 a year and get a company van, however I dont know how I would go about a job like this as I have no experience of it

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated folks

You could try and get an apprenticeship in gas, plumbing etc but there isnt much about. Ive been looking for ages now, had a guy that said i can work with him etc etc. We agreed on pay and everything and then he dropped me. So now trying to find something else.

You can do an apprenticeship with british gas but they want like £16,000 for it and only pay you £500 per month while your an apprentice.

Try and speak to Colin from here, pretty sure he retrained in that industry after doing another job for a while beforehand and he is now making a good living from it.

Other ideas, depends whether you want something 'professional' or 'skilled'?

If it's the latter, what about plumbing? You might have missed the boat on the shortage (of plumbers) making it possible to earn loads from it though.

Spark?

I wouldn't recommend going into sales unless you're very good at it, which most people aren't. I also wouldn't recommend going into an office job if you get bored easily, you will also have to work yourself up from the bottom which means low wages for several years (and no guarantees).

Have you never thought about trying to set-up on your own as a mechanic? You already have a skill that many others would love to have and if you could find a bit of capital from somewhere and get on a night course at a college (in business/accounting) it could earn you loads of cash and re-spark your interest in cars?

Hi bud,

See your a fellow Edinburger!

Check out Jewel and Esk Valley College. They have an offshore apprenticeship program sponsored by OPITO. If memory serves there is an intense course you can take now but Colin on here should be able to clarify this as he did the 3 year course.

It will provide you with necessary qualifications to get offshore.

Hope that helps!

thanks for the reply mate, to be honet my interest in cars has really died, also there is far to much competition from other garages to try starting up on my own. I might try to look more into the offshore jobs, found one earlier on for a wind turbine technician so might see what the score is with that. cheers for the help though

British Gas have apprentice schemes going on, as mentioned above, but pay little salary...but once qualified after x amount of months money is good, plus you work less hours/days during summer periods.

BT Apprenticeship? I'm 23, was also in the career change boat, been on the scheme since Feb. Was pointed to it by Corsasport as well.

Money isn't much for the first 3 years mind, 12k for the first year! Although you are learning, training etc blah blah..

The thing is with some of those jobs is there is no progression...will be the same everyday until you die, unlike public sector stuff (firefighter for instance) you can work your way up.

get onto opito

Send your CV to global highland and a covering letter explaning the fact you will do your survival training if offered a position.

Won't do any harm.

Thought of just moving to HGVs, busses etc? Pay is better than a car mechanic too. Mate has just been sent working in Malta for 3 months from DAF too, lucky bastard.

The pay seems to be alot better for hvs's and buses, most are around 15 pound an hour. Not to sure if they would take a car mechanic on, anyone have any experience of this? Cheers mate thats a good suggestion
