The diesels, are they fairly reliable? Cheap to get parts for? Most seem high mileage but cheap.
Any other vans that are similar size, reliable and cheap that are worth looking at?

I've got one mate and it's been great. Dad owned it from new now I use it most days. Only thing I'd say is avoid the first ones like mine, they use the Isuzu engine and they can be harder to get parts for. I get approx 560/570 to a rank which is about £65.
Starter motors can fail often but there generally sound.

I have a 1.7td MK4 Astra (not the van mind but same thing)
Honestly, the cheapest car in terms of repairs ive ever had. It gets dogs abuse, i barely maintain the thing and its hardly put a foot wrong. Not just engine but everything. Superb buy.
EGR valve usually blocks up causing it to go in limp mode, quick clean sorts it, its a twat to get to though however, so i just leave it. I can get the eml to come on on request and go off too, so it doesnt bother me too much been running it with that issue for 3 years

Sounds ideal for my brother as he treats his cars in a similar fashion to you!
Is it not the Astra you set on fire?

Arrrr yes another thing is the rear brake bias thingy can stick, it's like a spring that adjusts the rear brakes when there's a load in the van

You get that on Corsa B's too. Seem to remember it could be a problem when lowering them.
