Been spoke about loads of times on here mate. Gotta admit there a bit of a bargain now. I saw a nice 172 in blue with some nice mods for as little as £2400.

Ive had a 182.
Check cambelt has been done, can be an expensive job. every 5 years or 70k.
Steering wheels melt easily. Exhaust hangers are shit.
Mine used to average about 32/33 mpg, driving to and from work, and around town, i only live 3 miles from work so it never warmed up properly, in the cold winter months it dropped to 28mpg.
On a motorway run it would do 38-40mpg. On track it was 16mpg

Every bit of rubber (bushes etc) will perish but are cheap and easy to fit.
Interior will rattle and steering wheel melt but it's a cheap French hot hatch, what do you expect!
The good thing is how easy parts are to get hold of, and they don't cost alot
Mpg will be 40mpg on a good run or 20 when ragged

If you're after a cheap toy you won't find more fun for less money, ph1 172's are a steal now.

Love my 182, will be selling in a few months though.
Common faults are EML likes to come on for no apparent reason.
Engine mounts can wear quick
Crap Exhaust mounts
Crap Exhaust - May Fall off - Most have been replaced though by now
I am doing about 50 miles a day in mine and im sitting on 40mpg. A full tank is about £60 and lasts me 400 miles Mainly motorway driving.
Around town, they can drink petrol, but on my around town driving it was doing no less than say 32.

Seeing 30-35 out my Phase 1.
Belts & fluid changes are essential maintainance on them.
All mounts as mentioned, engine and exhaust.
And the OE exhausts are bad for snapping at the cat join.

Had a 182.
Had both belts and tensioners changed after i bought it.
Interior didnt make any rattles.
Got over 42mpg going back and forth to work - 70 miles a day and done around 15k in 6 months.
Steering wheel didnt melt.
Only thing that was replaced due to the eml was the carbon canister.
Loved it.

Loved mine one of best cars I've ever driven.
Echo most of the comments in this thread tbh all rubber mounted things wear a lot and get random elms. But never stops working or doing a min 30mpg. Interior is cheap and naff my steering wheel melted. Didn't rattle at all though.
Needs recaros

Gotta 172 Cup here.
Steering wheel has melted, exhaust has fallen off twice/had to replace hanger twice and cambelt is expensive to have done. Luckily, this one doesn't rattle at all and handles really well as standard.
