i'm looking at another car for winter tomorrow, 5 door B. the owner says it sometimes squeeks on startup and that the fan belt might need tightening.
i have a feeling that its the waterpump and not the belt. is there anyway i can know for sure that its the pump when looking at it?
if it is just the belt, i take it the belt would be worn and slipping?

Could just be the alternator belt making the noise

then replace it when i get back

What car is it? And I can't see the waterpump only making a squeak on start up - it's more likely to be the aux belt that either needs replacing or tightening up.

My 1.2 8v alternator belt used to squeak like a bitch mainly when it rained. New one sorted it. as said above the waterpump shouldnt make a squeaking noise.

if its the belt whatever you do dont put any lubricants on there or it will just keep slipping when you put a new belt on, you want the pully to have as much grip on the belt as possible so that you dont have to over tension it and cause excess bearing wear, for diagnosing the fault easiest way is to open the bonnet and hear where it comes from, noise wise the waterpump will tend to make a squeak at a frequency in line with the engine revs whereas the belt will squeal like mad if you give it a rev, hope this helps

i bought the car as the noise was coming from the belt and half the teeth were missing. how do i get the belt off though?
there is a nut on a thread at the top which looks like it is supposed to move the alternator forwards or backwards, but its not moving anywhere?
there is also a nut on the bottom below the pulley. do i have to take this off aswell?
