How do tax rebates actually work?

I only ask because my friend who is on JSA, and has been for 2 years now, managed to get a tax rebate of £140 without working a single day this year. I searched a bit on google on how this would work but couldnt find anything. Anyone care to try and enlighten me as to how he managed it without working and normal working people get sod all from the government?

He got one last year as well which is what has confused me. Do they do it in separate chunks then?

It's impossible to tell from the info you've given. Tax is such a complicated business it could be down to various factors. Most likely he's paid too much tax when he was employed.

Fair enough. I just assumed you only got a tax rebate from the past year. Didn't know that it would be from up to 6 years ago.
