What he said.

Do you have a fuse box in the kitchen or accessible at least, probably a switch for the fire alarms

I assume it's a backup battery not a power battery so won't be something you'll get in a garage anyway. Find out the make and model of the alarm for us and someone will find the user manual online

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

They'll be interlinked (upstairs and downstairs) you should have a black, brown grey and green/yellow or a red, blue, yellow and green/yellow if old wiring

yellow or black is the link wire.

they should have their own fuse labelled smoke alarms or linked in with the lights, if this is the case its best to just take both off the ceiling for the night instead of messing with cables which you're unsure about.

if they're on their own fuse, disconnect the black or yellow depending which you have for the night (isolate power first) and have a cushty night sleep. then tomorrow, go garage, 2 new batterys and bobs your teapot.

forget the small battery, its not that.

It'll be one of two things,
1, The larger 12V 'motorbike' style battery is flat, this is very common and you can get off ebay for around £10-£20.

2, the internal fuse has popped.
If you pop off the plastic cover, take a look at the PCB board you should see atleast 2 fuses (same size/shape as 3 pin plug fuses). Theres a chance they might be glass fuses so you'll see if they've blown or not.

Disconnect the mains and take a quick look, but be prepared if its a relativly new alarm, the sounder should go off if you switch it off at the mains.
It'll only last for as long as the battery got charge left, if its flat, you may only hear a faint popping sounds from your house alarm.

good luck, it should be easy to sort tho.
