Only just noticed that post. In that case, you might have some malware that McAfee probably hasn't spotted TBH.

Worth downloading Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware onto a USB stick, rebooting into safe mode and then installing/running both programs.

try stopping some startup programmes in msconfig too, i've often found this can work a treat speeding things up. Just press the windows key with the letter R and you'll get a "run" box, type msconfig in that box then press OK, you'll then have a tab that says startup and try turning some programs off there. Things like the itunes helper that pow mentioned and anything else that doesn't need to be there (most of it probably) just be careful about what you're turning off. I wouldn't stray out of the startup tab in msconfig either if you don't fully know what you're doing!

Simply didn't check before posting. Was suppose to add installing an OEM copy of Win7 removed the hidden backup partition needed for the Dell Backup disc. And this (reinstalling another OS) voids any warranty according to the T&Cs that came with my Dell.

They wouldn't void your warranty for that, they'd be happy that you'd already tried reinstalling and they could tick that box off the decision tree.

The recovery partition can stay when you install windows from whatever disc also.

And again I'm going from my personal experience of installing OEM Win7 on my Dell, it removed the recovery partition and replaced it with the two standard partitions for Win7 (Boot and System).

I've never read the T&C's so not disagreeing with that, I'm saying what will happen if you phone them up for warranty service.

You've not selected the correct option, which has erased the recovery partitions, you can leave them no matter what disc you use.

This, do this! Will stop all the shite running at start up which will be what's causing it, especially on a Dell and more so if you've installed itunes. Disable everything (unless you have AV you want to use; but as many have said uninstall Mcafee).

There should be no need to re-format, just needs a brand new laptop clean.

ive not got an amazing laptop but did what people have said in here today and its helped my laptop out loads!! so much smoother and not so much lag when click things. so thanks people.

This thing is pissing me off no end! Trying to download avg but my Internet connection drops out every 30 seconds and I have to keep resuming. Must be something dodgy on there. I downloaded malware bytes at work earlier onto a memory stick. Installed on laptop and scanning now. It's found 16 threats already.

Gone for avast in the end. Internet connection still drops out every 30 seconds or less though. Malware bytes full scan removed 19 problems. Must be something else there.

i'd reformat if i were you mate... might sound drastic but i tend to do that if i have the slightest suspicion there could be something dodgy on my pc. after it's done and you've got your bare essential programs installed (and you've found it's now lightning quick!) ghost the hard drive so you can more easily reformat at a later date.
