We use Barclaycard for our card terminal/chip and pin machine, they charge us about 1.5% for credit card transactions and a flat rate of a few pence for debit cards.
They pay the money straight into an account with Bank of Scotland, who don't charge us anything.
However we have had the bank account in place for 13 years  and the card machine deal is about 2 years old now. So I'm guessing these deals will no longer be available.

as a temp solution setup google checkout and have a laptop in your garage for them to enter their details, will get an invoice e-mailed to them etc... bit lame but will work for now

No they don't. Square is only available in the US, it's not likely to catch on over here as there's a requirement to use chip and pin.

Also, banks invested all that money into switching over to chip and pin a few years back because they became liable for fraudulent transactions. I don't think they're likely to go back to magnetic strip technology that's easily cloned just because Jack from Twitter wants them to.
