I'm not clued up on how to do this - I want to put some of my DVDs onto my Laptop/Ext HDD for when I am away with work, as it saves me carrying a bulk of DVDs to lose/damage/take up space

Do I need software? If so, any reccomendations?
If not, how do I do it?

Download Handbrake.
Pop in DVD.
Run Handbrake with desired settings.
Done.

Depending on your connection/setup, it's usually quicker to download them already done.

Connection is utter wank when I'm at home. Takes around 40 mins to download 5MB updates for games on Xbox Live...

Cheers for suggestions

Either convert/re-encode as Balling mentioned using Handbrake or if you're not planning to keep it and storage isn't much of an issue, then you can use DVD Shrink and strip out the the video and save that to then hard drive which will take 20mins instead of X many hours re-encoding. However you do end up with a xGB VOB file instead of a 700MB H264 MKV etc
