What exactly are you looking for?
Something that's fun? Sensible? Combination of the two?
8k opens up quite a lot of choice. Any of the 3-4 year old Hot Hatches become available but also some older performance cars such as Scooby's and Evo's.
I can only speak for the CTR I suggested, you could get a mint EP3 with lots of change for 8K for modding - or you could get a ~2008 FN2 for 8K if you wanted something a little more modern and sensible.

Leon cupra R you'll pick up a mint low mileage one for £6k max.
Astra vxr is about the £8k mark but in my experience fragile as fuck.
I'd be looking at the golf gti or focus st. You can pick up a very nice mk4 golf R32 for that price as well.

What kind of car do you want? Cheap to run? Or do you have money to maintain something like an m3?

Think to watch out for with the Mazda 3 MPS is the tax is £445 for the year!

I have an 3mps and yes the tax is costly but it's once a year and I plan for it. It's not like it's an unexpected cost.

Bit spoilt for choice with that much to spend.
This would probably be what I'd get

I had this mentality when I bought my R32 but what sickened me was there was another one local to me that was only 6 months older with every extra and he paid the same amount for a years tax compared to my 6 months lol.
The mps is the same except that it's the newer ones that have the cheaper tax for a better car.

Suppose so, it's not a massive problem. £500 to tax and MOT a car for a year before anything it might fail on is a little daunting though.

In fact I'd also seriously consider a MK1 Focus RS.
