Is this wise? Can it be done safely? Any technique? Need to be 150+ BHP safe?

Need to place my engine and box in my subframe. If I know I can make custom hobbies easy enough then I don't need to pay £300+ at this moment in time or ever for that matter.

it is possible. BUT i wouldnt recommend it :/ imagine the damage if it went wrong and what would MR plod say if he caught you when it had blown up... or if they blew and locked your wheels solid and you hit another car...

Fusion welding would be the best bet. Would be just as strong as a non welded really

there is a lad on 16v mini who makes them is all?

they use them on xes ect

Wouldn't trust them if they were just mig welded, may be ok but I wouldn't trust them

I shortened a set for my mate who has a hot rod,
Runs in the tens at pod on 10inch wide slicks,
Just cut em in half cut the bit out, sleeved it, plug welded through some holes in the sleeve and welded round each end, if it can put up with 600bhp launchs on slicks I'm sure they'd be just fine for your application.

I just made sure they were straight, then ran em up too 3000rpm on the lathe, weren't no vibrations so went with it. they're such a small diameter as long as they are are straight should be no problems regarding balancing really.

Weld is as strong, or stronger, than the metal. But like gazza said you should sleeve it rather than weld the 2 bits of shaft.
Welded shafts is pretty common for conversions

i actually think the mini shafts and vaux are the same diameter..

If they are different diameters, just get a stepped sleeve

John I'm sure you will have seen loads of welded prop shafts before? I've seen standard ones that are welded together at the Uj end

nope, this is really my first delve into an engine conversion... i dont have a massive bank of mechanical knowledge.. im just using the net for research and having a go, worked for big ron.. if i fuck up who cares the imp only cost £750

If you sleve the shafts it can be done safely.. I had my other halfs uncle build some for me and they were spot on:
