Wanting to get myself a little starter DSLR but don't wanna pay out of my arse as I'm only just starting!

Any recommendations? Don't mind whether they're new or second hand!

to be honest you probably can't go far wrong with any of the big makes, Canon and Nikon tend to be the popular ones although I started with a Sony A200 and it was fantastic, really lovely colours out of it and in-body stabilisation which meant all lenses were stabilised. I believe the Pentax models are also very good. Spec some out with prices and lenses etc, possible lenses that you want to upgrade to in the future. You might not be thinking about more lenses right now but you will be if the bug bites

One advantage is that there tends to be more second hand action with Canon and Nikon being the most popular, but theres always ways and means around that. Sony cameras use the Minolta mount, so there are a whole host of Minolta lenses that can be had cheaply on the second hand market and theres no need for adapters etc. So just something to think about

Once you've seen some you like head into a real shop and have a play with all the ones you've picked out and choose the one that feels right/makes the most sense to you. If its cheaper online go home and order it, or if you can't wait buy in store

For the price i'de buy a SONY NEX-5 for more slicker than the Nikon and other leading camera, i work with these on a regular basis and found the NEX-5 aswell as looking ultra modern its also got some pretty amazing features all for a very good price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

thats a good point actually, i've based my answer on a DSLR, there are a whole host of other varieties that might be better for you. The Sony Nex range thats been mentioned.

if they've got Canons and a host of lenses it might not be a bad shout so you can lend/share gear if they're willing
