Is this one of those games where you have to wait hours and days for stuff to complete and is encouraged to use real money to purchase "a heap of potion" to speed up time?

To get further you can buy mojo yes. I agree, I hate that aspect, although there's nothing saying you have to spend, everything can be earnt without putting your hand in your pocket.
Don't really care what anyone thinks, we all have phone games and it requires a damn sight more thought and skill than the likes of angry birds.
