Not had a fine or being stupid before anyone asks

They pulled me over for a spot check as my exhaust is loud
They checked it and said i need a stamp to certify my exhaust is legit
It has the cat & silencer but the backbox is a racetube with a tip (i bought from a company nearby and its passed an mot before)
I told the policeman that it had passed an mot before and that it still had cat and silencer on it but he said the backbox still needs a silencer part on it with baffles
Is this right or am i right in thinking that because it has the cat and 1 silencer already theres nothing wrong with it?

It needs the cat and it needs to be a sensible noise level.

There's no legal requirement to have a set number of boxes but without them it will be too loud.

well it has a cat and a middle silencer but the backbox has no baffles etc?
im not complaining as i only need to take it to a mot station and get it stamped no fine or owt

I think you will find the company who sold you the backbox have a small print saying "Not for road use".

Take it to the MOT centre get the stamp and that will be it. Probably just got an angry piggy that couldn't get you for anything else.

If its CE marked it means it conforms to legislation (in this case build quality) but there is no legislation for exhaust Db limit so won't conform to that.

I'm sure that the official VOSA line is that the exhaust isn't actually allowed to be louder than factory spec, but obviously it's something that gets overlooked on tests

The rules are its at the MOT tester's discretion weather or not an exhaust is deemed too loud. I think its utterly stupid and they can't enforce it because measuring the level of decibels from the exhaust requires a decibel meter which is not even issued as MOT test equipment. How on earth an MOT tester will know exactly how loud each and every vehicle's exhaust was when it left the factory when they are not issued with any information or tools to test this is just plain stupid

The rules are that a car must not be unreasonably louder than a car with a standard exhaust:

Put www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/.../08%201246.pdf into google and it's a reply from VOSA telling someone about it

That's dated 2008 but I can't imagine it'd have changed

iv been pulled and they never said nowt about the 4.1 mani, decat, racetube and backbox witch is loud as fuck, it hurts my head

so many decibels is allowed, 98 or something?
