Do companies not service these then? I phoned a couple of local places and they say it works out cheaper to just buy a new machine than for someone to come out and service/regas them etc.?

I am - the one that's in my portable a/c machine 
The a/c bit works but it's a bit smelly when you turn it off and it doesn't seem icy cold hence my thread...

For an Aussie, you sure seem to be flapping about this 'heat'
Edit - Usually it's not much more to purchase a new unit rather than getting an old one serviced, reason why most AC companies won't do it. But tbf there isn't much to a portable unit (evap/water-based ones anyway) and if it's stinking then it probably just needs stripping down and cleaning.
However you can pick up wall mount units for a few hundred, remember B&Q/Wickes had deals on last summer.

It's a bit weird that you didn't take it to a shop, if you've asked a company to send someone out to your house to fix it they'll be charging you for making them come out I'd have thought

Portable a/c units rarely have service ports on them, the system is usually completely sealed. To re-gas them it requires taking the unit apart and fitting service ports, hence why most places don't want to know.

Why do they design them like that? Seems like a bit of a rip-off from the industry really - can't regas/service them so they'll have to buy a new one sort of mentality?

Not too sure why, although it's no different to any fridge is it? Take a look at the compressor on the back and you'll see the copper pipes blanked off at the ends. There's nowhere for the gas to leak so in theory should keep working for years and years.
