That hits the nail on the head for me.
We had about £80's worth of shopping, a baby in his silver cross carrier and car keys in hand. What "kid" would go to all that trouble for a few bottles of koppperberg?
I understand shops receive hefty fines for miss-selling but they should employee better staff if thats the case or run the wines and spirits on its own desk like the fags and have specialist people who have been on age identifying courses...
The police never have problems guessing ages.
Sorry but it has nothing whatsoever to do with common sense. Having a baby doesn't make you over 18 or look over 25 which is what this is about
The person serving you is following a rule that has been set out to them. If they get caught out and fail its the individual that gets fined, prosecuted, and ends up with a criminal record for serving an age restricted minor
I am a manager for asda and I deal with countless people in your position week in week out, at the end of the day the person serving you has asked you to both prove your age and has declined to serve you as you couldn't
And yes we can refuse to serve you with anything if we choose to

I worked in an offy for 7 years so have mixed feelings, can't see the problem with carry ID but also there is common sense, I was before the time of challenge 21/25 which is a shame as it is a good idea. Also if I didask someone and they kicked off it justmade me more stubborn, then again I only asked if they looked under 18 or if they looked young and where buying whitelightning or alcopops etc!

It's 100% a common sense thing. They have none.

Challenge 21 was a good idea. Would stop the good majority of youngs getting hold of stuff they 'shouldnt' have
Challenge 25 takes the piss
Challenge 30... WTF!
Youngs will get hold of beer, cigarettes, 18+ material etc from other means anyway
No they don't. But they get a bollocking once the report comes in by their supervisor/manager. I think it's 2 strikes of selling alcohol to minors (the people that come in and test it) and the shop is closed down. Used to work in retail.
The other night, I went into asda to buy some beer, the woman that served me, has served me for alcohol late in asda, for the past...4 years? I'm 23 now. She ID'ed me. I was like wtf? went to get ID from car but forgot it so sent missus in shop. It is very boring when you clearly look over 18 and still get IDed

If you mean the people in the shop they're just avoiding a fine.
Its easier to just do everyone, if I worked in a shop I wouldn't even bother trying, not paid to think, you're paid to scan items. Scan scan scan, ask, ask, get paid minimum wage, don't get a fine, go home, watch Corrie.
Please if we're going to blame people can you direct it towards the policy makers and the people who enforce the fines.
If I worked in a shop and I got fined probably three day's wage for it, I'd ask my own mother.
Work in a shop to earn some money to buy trousers, I'm not there to pay attention to the depth and frequency of your wrinkles.

There is no policy I'm aware of that says that at a certain arbitrary age, you can't buy alcohol when you are in the shops with your children.
That's common sense pure and simple. Then there's other obvious stuff like they were below you in school.
I'm not blaming someone in a shop from asking for ID from a bunch of young guys, I do blame them for being a bit slow when it's someone getting a bottle of wine at the same time as their weekly shopping.
There's also no policy that I'm aware of that says an 18 year old can't buy alcohol when in with a 17 year old. They can't buy it for the 17 year old but there's nothing to say they can't but it with them is there?

Would the shop or that member of staff still be fined though?
Does sound to me like they're just scared of that.

If an 18 year old bought alcohol while with a 17 year old, can't see how they'd get fined when no law was broken
I may be incorrect about this btw, if I am I'm happy to be shown.

I also have that problem all the time, my missus is 21 but still looks 17/18 so gets Id'd everywhere. if we go shopping I'll take my wallet but she won't necessarily take her handbag therefore no Id. There is no legal requirement to carry Id.

I think it's something to do with if they sell it to you and there's a possibility you are buying it for someone who's underage
Like aiding and abetting

If I was buying it for underage people, I'd leave them in the car.
Daft really, very easy to completely sidestep any safeguards.
I'm agreeing - the rules are terrible. I just wouldn't debate it if I worked in a shop, I'd just go there and make double sure I wasn't on the wrong side of it.

when i worked in somerfields we had to take a test on a computer every year about serving things to underage people.
they actually made you feel like a criminal with the way the questions came across.
i don't blame the people serving, but they don't have much common sense tbh.
only time i fucked up was when i asked a woman for i.d, only to find out she was 30 she looked really young though.
everyone else was either underage or between 18-21. i worked in my local town though and most people from my old school went in so i knew who was old enough or underage anyway.

My neighbour worked in the local shop a while ago and even she had to I'D me. She said she knew how old I was ( I was in the same school year as her son) but the managers or someone check the cameras to check the cashier's/assistants whatever you want to call them, are IDing people.

While i have no issue getting asked for ID I once got asked when buying a £50+ bottle of brandy. Not your usual tipple for the under age drinker (I was 26 at the time wearing a suit)
