Hi all a friend of mine brought himself a tidy mk3 Gsi Astra the car came from a lady owner and she had owned the car for a number of years this car is well known car on Astra mk3 owners club, problem is I've reg checked the car today and it's coming up as stolen in 1997 and still outstanding, I only done this as I was Gunna buy the car from my mate, now the cars all insured log book is present numbers match up taxed And moted and is not coming up as cat d or c just STOLEN, when insuring this car wouldn't the insurance say it was stolen?

It will insure ok, id use it as a bartering tool mind... Worth far less now

M795JOP is recorded as stolen. Loss date 16-07-1997. Ownership rests with the insurers who can repossess the vehicle.

if it is stolen then its the property of the original insurance company that paid out for the claim. The police can take it off your mate.

Yea bits and pieces it's had quite alot of money spent on it just very strange would the insurance company it's insured with now not mention anything about it?

DVLA would process the log book in the normal way, they wouldn't verify whether its property of the insurance company before issuing a keeper doc in his name.

Sounds like it may have been recovered and sold using the original V5 (house break-in and they stole the paperwork?) in which case it belongs to whoever paid out for the loss.

There could also be a reasonable explanation for it, namely the payout was returned. I'm not sure on the 'ownership rests with insurers' bit. Seems strange they'd know that.

Id keep previous owners details and just use it as normal.

Did you not read that newspaper article about that car stolen in the sixties and only recovered a few weeks ago from some unsuspecting person, I'm hoping this car isn't and it's an admin error, but I will keep previous owners details just incase double checking all the vin numbers to log book etc again

No. But even rarer that its on an M plate.

I had an M plate GSi XE about 5/6 years ago, and i was told there was only 31 M plate XE's left on the road back then.

Colour is it?? 100% standard??

Not 100% original but not much done to it, it was spectral blue but the lady we brought it off sprayed it diamond black restored it as it was abit rough when she first brought it, it's just very very clean no rust no none faults drives great looks good will get some pictures just gotta find camera lead, I've spoke to my bruva in law who's works in traffic and he can't check the car but advised my mate to go to our local police station to get to the bottom of this.

I wouldn't do that. If someone came back to me even after a week of buying a car off me, i'd tell them to do one. Soon as you sign that log book, it's your problem. Not the sellers.

Yes, if they came back and said it's making a funny noise maybe. Not if you're driving it home and the police take it off of you because it's a stolen car. It wouldn't just be the buyer at your door, chances are it'd be the police aswell
